About HeritageTrails

One sunny spring bank holiday weekend I planned a drive to the Lake District. Wanting to avoid motorway congestion and bland motorway services, I opted to take the back roads via the A1. While searching for somewhere to stop for lunch halfway through my journey, I stumbled across the beautiful and heritage-rich Newark-on-Trent — which, as I discovered, boasts nine amazing trails curated by the Newark Civic Trust.

What a revelation it was: arriving on a whim in an unfamiliar town and leaving feeling genuinely enriched by its history and character. The trails set the scene for the important events that occurred in Newark, zoomed right in on the details you could easily miss, and helped me travel back in time to imagine what it would have been like to live there.

Heritage is treasured and nurtured throughout the UK, with so much depth to explore. Trails offer an exceptional entry point into this world — nothing beats a curated, handcrafted route where passionate locals have invested considerable effort in sharing their knowledge. Exploring local heritage remains one of the finest ways to understand and connect with a place's history, culture, and community.

I hope this site makes discovering these treasures easier, allowing you to have the same enriching experience I did in Newark.

The Trail Creators

Thank you! We deeply respect and value the important work done by organizations and individuals who create heritage trails. These content creators — local councils, museums, galleries, community history groups, and passionate individuals — are the lifeblood of heritage exploration. Their expertise, research, and dedication make these cultural discoveries possible.

Rather than simply aggregating content, we're actively seeking meaningful partnerships with trail creators. These collaborations ensure accurate information, proper attribution, and fair representation of their work. Through these partnerships, we can offer enhanced promotion of official trails, driving more foot traffic to important cultural sites and supporting the mission of heritage organizations.

Get Involved

HeritageTrails is just getting started, we welcome contributions and collaborations from anyone who shares our passion for heritage. If you're a trail creator, we'd love to talk with you about featuring your trails on our platform, ensuring they reach a wider audience while maintaining your vision and attribution.

We're always looking for suggestions about trails we should include. Perhaps you know of a hidden gem in your neighborhood or have discovered a fascinating historical route during your travels. Your insights help us build a more comprehensive and diverse collection of trails.
